Silence
As a Korean immigrant, my interest in the history and relationship of the two countries—Korea and America—naturally runs deep. ‘The Shriek of Silence’ series is a photographic survey for the crime sites of American troops in South Korea. American troops have been stationed in South Korea for longer than fifty years. Over the years, it has been estimated that these soldiers have been responsible for approximately 100,000 crimes, including larceny, arson, motor vehicle-related violence, environmental pollution, sexual assault, and murder. This has long been a serious issue in South Korea. This wealth of crime has caused Koreans to look upon America, as a whole, with resentment. I feel responsible, as a Korean immigrant and as an artist, to discuss a large and complex layer of the matter. The images are intended to be aesthetically pleasing while noticeably disturbing, holding a “tension of serenity.”
